Introducing our newest MPULLian, Marelise Gilbert - Head of Operations and Possibilities

As MPULL continues to grow, so too do our needs. Marelise Gilbert recently joined us as our brand new Head of Operations and Possibilities, helping us to streamline our processes and fortify our team.Marelise first cut her teeth in the digital realm after earning a Media and Marketing degree at AAA. Her first foray into the world of marketing and agency life was at Berry Bush BBDO (now BBDO) as a media planner and buyer.

From there, she dabbled in the online gambling industry at what was then known as ForwardSlash, where she specialised in loyalty and CRM. Having caught the digital bug, it was on to bigger things at Acceleration, where Marelise got to experience all aspects of digital marketing: from client liaison and media planning to traffic and analytics. The next logical step was to join Clickatell, where she spent six years as their Media Director, overseeing marketing strategy, understanding business operations and the way that marketing can best align and add on to overall operations, as well as allocating the right resources and processes to make this more efficient. The rest, as they say, is history. I sat down with her to find out a little more about the things that make her tick.

What drew you to MPULL?

My first interaction with MPULL was while I was working at Clickatell – I was impressed by the quality of work and the innovative mindset when it came to content. Turnaround times were really fast, and the people I worked with were refreshingly down to earth and approachable. I first met Daryn when he came to Clickatell to talk to us about inbound marketing. I shared his vision about the future of digital and the more I learnt, the more excited I was about the things MPULL was doing.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?

In one year I lost ten kgs, did my mini MBA and planned my entire wedding. I learnt that when you’re doing something you’re really passionate about, you can achieve anything.

What’s on your bucket list?

My top three ‘musts’ are: visiting the US on 4th July, which is my birthday; give a TED talk; do the Impi Challenge. [Several MPULLians have signed up the the Impi and are currently training for it, so watch this space.]

What are your top three favourite books of all time?

The Code of the Extraordinary Mind, by Vishen Lakhiani; #Girlboss Sophia Amaruso; The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.

Do you have an idol/role model?

I had the honour of meeting Nelson Mandela – he had a way of making you feel like you were the only person in the room. Currently, my role model is Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, and founder of the Lean In movement.

If you could travel back in time and visit a specific period, which would you choose and why?

My parents are no longer alive, and I miss them dearly, so I’d choose Christmas with my parents. They made it special for us, and it was a very happy time.

What are you passionate about?

In no particular order: technology, dancing, my husband and my two Labradors.

What’s the strangest talent that you have?

I have a knack for (accurately) predicting when people will get engaged.

What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

I have two: horoscopes (I have two apps on my phone) and watching wedding shows like ‘Say Yes to The Dress’.

If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?

I’d want to be telepathic.

Choose one: a 10 litre bottle of your favourite wine or a basket of kittens?

Animal welfare is a cause I strongly support so I’d go with the basket of kittens.

Thanks for chatting to us, Marelise! We hope you’re enjoying settling into your new role.
